Many of the food and eating practices discussed in this section are still being researched, and so just as with HD treatments, please always consult a physician to see if a particular food or eating practice is right for you. Because of the immense importance of nutrition, HOPES has developed this chapter to discuss some of the various foods and eating practices that can have both a general health-promoting effect, and also special benefits for people coping with Huntington’s disease. Diet and HD In addition to the medications that we all get at a pharmacy, another large influence on human health can also be found in the marketplace… at the grocery store! One’s diet can have an immense influence on everything from energy level to the ability to fight diseases. So while no one can choose their own genes, people at risk for HD can choose a healthy lifestyle. There is great variability in age of onset and progression of disease, only about 40% of which can be explained by the number of CAG repeats – and lifestyle choices might account for some of that variability. Also, scientists have recognized that genes only tell part of the story, as described here.

People with HD can engage in many activities – such as physical therapy and exercise – that help them deal with symptoms. Managing HD Though people with the HD allele will eventually show symptoms, there are many lifestyle choices that can make the disease easier to manage.Although no cure exists, scientific research aimed at finding effective treatments for HD is underway. Huntington’s disease (HD) is a genetic disorder that progressively affects an individual's behavioral, cognitive, and motor function. The “HD Scientists” section gives some insight into the work that some individuals are doing, and the “Research Institutions” section talks about some major sites of HD research. The “Research Basics” section describes how researchers study HD the “Research Updates” section talks about some of the discoveries that have been made, and future areas that scientists might study in the future. The “Conferences and Conventions” section contains updates from HD conventions around the world. With this improved insight, researchers throughout the world are actively investigating and testing ways to delay, stop, or reverse the course of the disease. Research and HD Welcome to the Research and HD section of the website! In the past decade, intensive research efforts have given scientists a much better understanding of how HD damages the brain.Check out the HOPES Brain Tutorial for an illustrated tour of the brain look at our “Neurobiology” section for an in-depth look at the cells that make up the brain go to the “Other Neurodegenerative Conditions” section to learn about diseases that share some similarities to HD. This section of the website gives an introduction to the brain, focusing on the changes caused by HD. HD and the Brain Huntington’s disease is a neurodegenerative condition, meaning that symptoms are caused by the death of nerve cells in the brain. Our site is intended to be an educational resource, and address a range of topics through written articles and podcasts. Huntington's Outreach Project for Education at Stanford (HOPES) is a student-run project at Stanford University with the goal of making information about Huntington’s Disease (HD) more accessible to audiences worldwide.
